When A Collection Forms A Basis

This animation illustrates the basis criterion in topology: a collection C of open subsets of X is a basis if every open set U and every point x in U admits some basis element c with x in c and c contained in U. Visual overlays show open sets, sample points, and shrinking basis elements fitting inside larger open sets, helping students see why this local containment condition guarantees C generates the whole topology through unions.

The prompt that made it

Let X be a topological space. Suppose that C is a collection of open sets of X such that for each open set U of X and each x in U, there is an element c of C such that x belongs to c which is a subset of U. Then C is a basis for topology of X Audience: first year maths msc student
